HOW TO BECOME A DOCKING PILOT

Years of training and experience are required to prepare for a position as a docking pilot.  The path to this experience however can be quite varied. Some individuals may attend one of the maritime acadamys,  Some may work start out on harbor tugs while others go down to sea on ships.  Through this process the individual will take tests of increasing difficulty as they attain higher levels of license. They will rise through the ranks, eventually sailing as captain.  Along the way you will learn about navigation, engineering, management, marine transportation, cargo operations and a number of other skills required to prepare you for your job.  The selection process is highly competitive as only the best of the best are chosen to train as an apprentice docking pilot.  After selection as a apprentice docking pilot you begin training once again.  You must learn every foot of the port you will work in.  You must learn he characteristic of the tides, currents and weather. You must transfer this knowledge into a first class pilots
